The Giving Garden

The Girl Scout Silver Award is earned as the scout designs, leads and implements a
community project. The project must be a “Take Action” that addresses a community
problem and is sustainable. Olivia C. and Olivia F., from Troop 76932 have volunteered
collecting and sorting food for the Novi Food Pantry and have designed the Giving
Garden to help those that could use some fresh produce.

The girls collaborated with our church, the Food Pantry, Scouts BSA and the MSU
Tollgate center to help them with the design of the garden. Along with fellow scouts,
friends, family and Scout Troop 407 and 704, garden boxes were built and filled and the
fencing reinforced. Planting began in June and the first veggies were picked early in
August. The strawberry box is quite full of plants that will produce next spring! The girls
also designed and printed a brochure for the recipients that informs them of ways to
care for fresh vegetables and it includes a recipe.

As the garden continues to bring forth some tomatoes, we are so grateful for their
dedication to watering, weeding and removal of unwanted critters. We will work together
to tend to this garden through the harvest and to prepare it next spring for a season of
giving.
